The red ribbon is used to bring awareness to drug trafficking and drug abuse. The origin of the week sprouted in 1985 after Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers that he was investigating. After his death, people wanted to honor him for his sacrifice, so the first National Red Ribbon Week was in 1988. It was started by the National Family Partnership. This year, JHS’s SADD club is tying red ribbons on vehicles. They are also decorating the school's display case with a red ribbon awareness theme.
