Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of performing in a small chamber ensemble concert that brought together the diverse sounds of saxophone, brass, flute, and clarinet ensembles. Each group brought something unique to the stage starting with the saxophone quartet whose rich, smooth tones set a captivating mood for the evening. They played selections ranging from classical to jazz. The brass ensemble followed, filling the space with bold, energetic sounds that commanded attention and added a dynamic contrast to the program. They had a variety of different brass instruments, and were the largest of the small groups which added to their powerful sound. The flute ensemble offered a delicate, expressive performance with the musicians skillfully navigating intricate melodies and creating a light, airy atmosphere. This included “Defying Gravity” which was a hit due to the recent release of the movie version of Wicked. Our clarinet group was our closing act, and brought a depth of emotion and precision. Their closing piece — aptly named “Finale” — was a stunning close to a great concert. It has been a truly unique experience, and I would recommend chamber involvement to everyone in band, as it really helps you built intonation and communication skills in music. I would also like to thank Mr. Eargle for all of the morning hours put in, and the parents along with other family and friends for attending and being great audience members.
