On Saturday, Jan 21, the Juniata Wrestling team hosted Berks Catholic, Cedar Crest, South Williamsport, Philipsburg-Osceola Coatesville, Southern Huntingdon, and Harrisburg High Schools in a tournament. With Berk Catholic, Harrisburg, and Philipsburg-Osceola taking home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes, Juniata did not place but got close with 4th!
During their match against Coatesville Area High School, Juniata prevailed with a 39-29 win in the quarter-finals. At 127, Colton Roles pinned his opponent in 3 minutes and 9 seconds. At 133, Rider Smith pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 42 seconds. At 139, Casey Smith won by decision in his only match of the day. At 145, Taylor Smith pinned his opponent in 3 minutes and 43 seconds. At 172, Harrison Mummah pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 23 seconds. Wrestling 107, Anthony Maradiaga pinned his opponent in 2 minutes and 44 seconds. At 114, Joey Baumbarger pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 37 seconds.
In the Semi-finals, Juniata lost a difficult match against Harrisburg. Still, some team members succeeded in winning individual matches. Taylor Smith, at 139, pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 11 seconds. At 172, Harrison Mummah pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 28 seconds. Wrestling 215, Lane Piper secured a pin after 4 minutes and 25 seconds. At 107, Anthony Maradiaga pinned his opponent in 1 minute and 32 seconds. At 114 and 127, Joey Baumbarger and Rider Smith won by decision, Joey 10-5 and Rider 8-1. Wrestling 121, Colton Roles won by major decision 15-7.
Fighting unsuccessfully for third place, Juniata lost to Philipsber-Oseala 42-18.
At 139, Taylor Smith took a forfeit because his opponent was too afraid to wrestle him. At 172, Harrison Mummah won 9-4 by decision. Wrestling 189, Kelton Bunnel won by major decision 5-3 in overtime. Joey Baumbarger, wrestling 114, beat his opponent 9-2 by decision. Rider Smith, at 127, was the last wrestler to emerge victorious with a 7-0 win by decision.
